As technology continues to be a prominent part of our day-to-day actions, unfortunately, so do the number of viruses attempted by scammers and hackers to get to your personal information (identity theft). With a New Year among us, Granite wants to ensure everyone is aware of any potential scams. The best way to keep yourself, your computer and your company safe from these attacks is to be aware of the current scams so you know what to watch for.
Recently, Granite has seen an increase in calls from clients reporting a pop-up virus that is trying to get you to download a cleaning scan. We want to help you become aware and steer clear of this threatening virus.
This virus is a pop-up that comes up and acts as if it will remove an infection from your computer, but in reality, is a form of virus that is trying to be downloaded on your computer. There are multiple forms of this threat, some pop-ups that say there are multiple virus infections on your computer that want you to pay for and download a link. Other forms say your computer is infected and to call a customer service number and they will clean it for you. Either version is a scam. The download will install a malware program on your computer. The customer service number will connect you to a group of scammers who will attempt to have you give them access to your computer via a remote access program. However, luckily for you, there is a quick and easy way to avoid getting this virus. When the pop-up appears on your computer, simply shut down your computer – It is important not to click anywhere on your screen before you shutdown. You will not be able to close out the pop-up, but restarting your computer should clear the error and nothing will be installed.
If you believe your computer is infected with a virus, do not hesitate and give Granite Technology Solutions a call. Identity theft prevention is one of our top priorities. We will help determine if a virus is present and if so, clean and restore your computer for you.
