Protect Your Electronics from Winter Storms

Updated: Jul 2, 2018

In the US, 70% of power outages are caused by severe weather*. Bozeman is prone to power outages caused by snow and other winter storms in the upcoming months. Your electronics should be protected from power surges, blackouts and voltage fluctuations. Without some sort of protection, the power surges that occur when power comes back on after an outage can cause some components of electronic power supplies to fail.

For basic protection, you can use a surge suppressor. These protect your equipment’s electrical circuits from electrical surges and voltage spikes. It can also filter disruptive line noise caused by rain, snow and lightning, but be sure to test your strip regularly to ensure it is performing correctly.

For more advanced protection, Granite Technology Solutions recommends an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). These units offer the same protection as surge suppressors, but with the added bonus of emergency battery backup. UPSs prevent loss of data and allow for the safe shutdown of equipment during brownouts or if your power goes out.

Call Granite Technology Solutions if you need help picking out the right solution for your home or business to keep your data and systems protected through the winter.
